Murray State Basketball’s Lawrent Rice Dismissed After Arrest on Assault, Strangulation Charges

Just one week before the Murray State Racers' season opener, sophomore point guard Lawrent Rice has been removed from the men’s basketball team following his arrest on serious charges. The incident unfolded on Sunday night when campus police detained Rice, who now faces charges of 4th degree dating violence, 1st degree strangulation, and 1st degree criminal mischief.
Rice, a promising young player for the Racers, had shown growth during his freshman season, contributing as a backup guard with increasing minutes toward the season's end and averaging over 3 points per game. However, in a swift response to his arrest, Murray State Athletics released a statement Monday afternoon, confirming Rice’s dismissal: “Sophomore guard Lawrent Rice is no longer a member of the Murray State Men’s Basketball program. The Department of Athletics will have no further comment on the matter.”
The charges against Rice are severe, with 1st degree strangulation and criminal mischief among the highest levels of charges for these offenses. He was booked into the Calloway County Jail and is scheduled for arraignment on Nov. 19 at Calloway County District Court.
270 Daily Interviews Paducah Mayor George Bray on Re-election Goals, City Growth, and Personal Passions

In a recent interview with 270 Daily, Paducah Mayor George Bray shared his vision for the city’s future as he campaigns for re-election. From addressing key challenges like economic growth and affordable housing to balancing Paducah’s rich cultural heritage with modern development, Mayor Bray discussed his plans for continued progress. He also opened up about his personal interests, offering a glimpse into the life of the man behind the “Mayor” title. Here’s what he had to say.
What are the biggest challenges Paducah faces, and how will you address them?
A: "Paducah is a city with a quality of life second to none. Our main challenges revolve around growth. After years of stagnation, our community is growing, yet we still have many residents at or near the poverty level. Addressing this requires more affordable housing and job growth, both of which I’m prioritizing. Over the last four years, we’ve added 850 jobs, and we are redirecting over $1 million in housing incentives for 2025 to see more progress.”
How do you balance preserving Paducah’s rich cultural heritage with promoting modern development?
A: "Our heritage is incredibly important, and we’ve supported it heavily these last four years. The City pledged $500,000 to save the Columbia Theatre and helped secure a $1.2 million grant for the Hotel Metropolitan. Unfortunately, the Katterjohn Building was beyond repair, so we made the difficult decision to demolish it, but any new housing will respect the historic charm of the Fountain Avenue and Jefferson Street area."
Why should Paducah voters choose you as their mayor?
A: "Paducah is growing after years of decline. We’ve partnered with McCracken County on projects like the Paducah Sports Park and a much-needed 911 system upgrade. Growth is evident downtown, midtown, and in the mall area. Consistent leadership is essential to keep this momentum, and I humbly ask for your vote to continue Paducah’s progress."
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be, and where in Paducah would you go?
A: "I’d love to have dinner with Ronald Reagan to discuss American politics. With so many great local restaurants, I’d have to take him out every night for at least a week to truly experience Paducah’s food scene."
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
A: "I’m an avid cyclist and rode over 1,000 miles this past summer. I’ve been riding for over 50 years, and my dream vacation would be watching the Tour de France."
Outside of work, what do you enjoy?
A: "I love music and concerts, and my wife Angie and I enjoy dancing. If there’s music and a dance floor, we’re likely on it."
As Paducah continues to navigate its growth and development, Mayor Bray’s focus on economic progress and cultural preservation underscores his vision for the city. His commitment to affordable housing, job creation, and celebrating Paducah’s heritage highlights the blend of tradition and progress he hopes to achieve if re-elected.
Abandoned Puppies Found On Side of the Road: McCracken County Urges Public’s Help in Animal Abuse Case
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office is calling on the community for assistance in an animal abuse investigation after seven abandoned puppies were discovered in poor health near Woodville Road and Cairo Road.
The puppies, believed to be around two months old, were left in distressing condition and are currently under the care of the Humane Society. They will remain there until they are medically cleared and ready for adoption.
In a social media statement, the sheriff’s office urged anyone with information about the case to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in addressing animal cruelty. Those with relevant information are encouraged to contact local authorities to assist in the investigation.
