Early Morning Collision Claims Life on Interstate 24 in McCracken County

Early Wednesday morning, October 16, 2024, at 4:49 AM, a two-vehicle crash occurred on the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 near the 11-mile marker. Deputies from the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office responded to a devastating collision.

Eric Jackson, 64, of Gilbertsville, Kentucky, was driving a 2005 Mercury Mariner when the unthinkable happened. While attempting to change lanes, his vehicle collided with a 2021 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Anne Calderone, 39, of Grass Lake, Michigan, who was also traveling westbound. The impact caused Jackson's vehicle to roll over several times, finally coming to a stop in the middle of the highway.

Sadly, Eric Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene by McCracken County Coroner Amanda Melton.

The westbound lanes remained closed for four hours to allow for a thorough investigation. In this heartbreaking moment, we ask that you hold the Jackson family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this immense loss.

Paducah Welcomes New Counseling Practice: Sycamore Counseling Services Opens November 12

517 Broadway, Sycamore Counseling Services

As the need for mental health services surges, Paducah is welcoming a new resource that will help bring transformative care to the community. Sycamore Counseling Services, led by Shelby Miller, a counselor who recently relocated from Louisville, is opening its doors on November 12 at 517 Broadway, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Chamber at 10 AM.

Specializing in couples counseling, anxiety disorders, and faith-integrated therapy, Shelby hopes her practice will help meet the growing demand for mental health support in Western Kentucky. We had a chance to talk with Shelby to learn more about her vision for Sycamore Counseling Services and how she plans to make a lasting impact on individuals, families, and the community. Here’s what she had to share.

What inspired you to open your practice in Paducah, and what do you hope it will bring to the community?

My family just recently moved to the area from Louisville. My husband is a Marshall County native and we are looking forward to putting down some roots in Western Kentucky. I knew downtown Paducah was the perfect spot for my counseling practice when I visited last year. Walking down Broadway, you can almost feel the energy buzzing in the air - amazing local restaurants, lovely storefronts and beautiful sights. I have so many hopes for my counseling practice, but I primarily hope for people to experience deep and lasting change. I aim for the kind of change that not only helps one individual or couple walk in greater healing, but the kind of healing that changes marriages, families, communities and regions.

There’s a growing need for mental health services in the area. How will your practice help fill that gap, and what specific services will you offer?

The Paducah Area already has a vibrant mental health community and I look forward to joining them! Together, we can provide a diverse range of mental, behavioral, emotional and relational services. At Sycamore Counseling Services, I focus primarily on couples counseling, anxiety-based disorders, sexual issues and clients who are interested in integrating faith and therapy. I offer individual counseling for folks 16 and older as well as couples counseling for couples at all stages (dating, engaged, married or considering divorce). All services are offered in person at my Broadway location or via telehealth. I even offer couples counseling retreats for those who prefer more intensive blocks of counseling to deepen their relationship or navigate crises and seek healing together.

For those who may be hesitant about seeking mental health support, what would you say to encourage them to take that first step?

First, I want to say "I understand." Stepping out of your comfort zone into the unknown is difficult, no matter what you are doing. I'd encourage you to honestly ask yourself "What's the worst thing that can happen?" You might find that it's not right for you, or you might find yourself on a lasting journey of change that impacts your career, sense of self, relationships and purpose for generations.

What are some of the most common issues you see people facing today, and how can counseling make a difference in their lives?

Anxiety is rampant in our world. We are more disconnected and more anxious than ever. This can be attributed to so many facets of modern life: technology and social media, increased distractions, communication deficits, limited social interactions and the list can go on and on. Counseling for anxiety can be so beneficial. In my office, I develop deep relationships with my clients where they experience unconditional support, but it doesn't stop there. Then, I push. I push my clients to systematically face their fears. And in this process, they gain self-efficacy. That's just a fancy psychological word for saying people figure out how to believe in themselves. And once someone believes in themselves? Watch out - They change the world!

What’s the best way for people to learn more or get in touch with you once your practice opens?

If you want to stay connected, follow me on Instagram and Facebook. Or even better, shoot me a text, give me a call or write me an email and let's find time to connect to see if counseling with Sycamore Counseling Services is the right choice for you.

Birmingham, Kentucky: The Ghost Town Beneath Kentucky Lake

1930’s Birmingham, KY

Ghost towns often evoke the images of desolate streets, hollowed-out buildings, and a silence that feels haunted by the past. But not all ghost towns rest on dry land. Some, like Birmingham, Kentucky, lie beneath the waters, hidden from sight but not from memory. Submerged beneath Kentucky Lake, Birmingham’s story is both a testament to human ambition and a reminder of how entire towns can simply vanish beneath the surface—leaving behind the eerie remains of a place that once thrived.

The calm waters of Kentucky Lake may seem peaceful, but below, the remnants of Birmingham linger. When the water levels are low, something unsettling happens: the past begins to emerge. Birmingham Point, once the bustling center of town, reveals glimpses of old streets, cracked foundations, and the forgotten corners of homes. The sight of these ghostly remnants, surfacing for brief moments before being swallowed again by the lake, is both fascinating and eerie. It’s as though the town is trying to claw its way back to the world, reminding us…
