Cannabis Comes to Kentucky: Discover Which Western KY Locations Are Leading the Way!

Kentucky has reached a significant milestone in its path to establishing a medical cannabis industry, awarding the state’s first cultivation and processing licenses through a lottery held on October 28. The Kentucky Lottery Corporation’s headquarters in Louisville served as the venue for the historic lottery, with Governor Andy Beshear and top officials in attendance. The event marked the beginning of Kentucky’s commitment to creating a safe, equitable, and regulated medical cannabis program, with selected businesses poised to serve patients across the state by January 2025.

Several western Kentucky applicants were among the winners, with notable selections including….

Paducah Mayoral Candidate David Guess Shares Vision for Change and Growth in 2024 Election

As Paducah’s mayoral election approaches, the race has become a contest of differing visions for the city’s future. In an interview with 270 Daily, the current city commissioner and small business owner David Guess discusses his priorities, his plans to reduce wasteful spending, and his goal to streamline bureaucracy in city governance. Below, Commissioner Guess reflects on key issues facing Paducah and his plans for meaningful reform.

What are the biggest problems Paducah is facing, and how will you address them?

A: "Paducah faces critical challenges: wasteful spending, stagnant growth, and a bloated bureaucracy that stifles progress. For example, $53,000 in taxpayer dollars went to a water bowl in the dog park—spending that wouldn’t happen if it were personal funds. While my opponent claims progress, local businesses continue to close, and young people are leaving for better opportunities. We’ve had some achievements together as elected officials, but it’s not enough. Over the last four years, I’ve pushed to reduce bureaucracy, but these efforts have stalled. Paducah deserves a mayor who prioritizes transparency, accountability, and a pro-business environment."

How do you plan to balance preserving Paducah’s heritage while promoting modern development?

A: "Preserving Paducah's cultural heritage is essential, but we can and should integrate it into modern development. I support adaptive reuse of historic buildings and providing incentives for developers who respect our heritage. It’s possible to maintain Paducah’s identity while encouraging growth, and it’s essential that we do."

Why should voters choose you to be Paducah’s mayor?

A: "I’ve lived in Paducah all my life and worked as an HVAC contractor and investor here for over 30 years. My dedication to this community as a four-time city commissioner gives me insight into what’s holding us back. My opponent has had his chance, but we’re still facing many of the same issues. While he operates within a corporate framework, I’ve been a small business owner, and I understand the needs of Paducah’s residents and businesses firsthand. For instance, I recently helped a resident get a building permit that had been delayed for six months. Bureaucratic delays like these hinder business investment, and I’m determined to bring real change."

If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be, and where would you go in Paducah?

A: "I’d love to have dinner with Alben Barkley, a former U.S. Vice President and senator from Kentucky. His wit and political insight are legendary. We’d go to Grill 211 and enjoy Freddie’s Lobster Rise while discussing American politics and the evolution of discourse since his time."

What’s something about you that might surprise people?

A: "I was so into the show Days of Our Lives that I once arranged my college classes around it. I can talk Bo, Hope, John, Marlena, and Victor Kiriakis with the best of them."

What do you enjoy doing for fun?

A: "Golfing and spending time at Kentucky Lake are two of my favorite activities. I also enjoy people-watching from the dock. If elected, I want to bring back weekend events downtown. Our riverfront stage is underutilized, and I’d love to see more entertainment happening there every weekend."

With a platform focused on reducing wasteful spending, tackling bureaucracy, and boosting Paducah’s appeal as a place to live and work, the candidate aims to position himself as the choice for those seeking a fresh approach. He believes his experience as a small business owner and city commissioner gives him the perspective needed to lead Paducah into a more prosperous future.
