Good morning, 270. It’s Wednesday, October 16th. This is the 270 Daily News. Thanks to everyone who voted on yesterday’s poll on amendment 2, the results are still coming in but when we last checked it was 61 percent in favor of “👎 No! The funds should stay with the public school system”.

Also, like one of our readers sent in yesterday, it’s important to remember these “funds” are our tax dollars. It’s our money. Which should make every one of us take these votes and elections that much more seriously.

270 Daily’s goal is to be as neutral as possible and only share the facts, so that you can take the information and make an informed decision independently.

Another Case of Chronic Wasting Disease Confirmed in Kentucky Deer Farm, State Response Plan Activated

A case of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been confirmed in a deer at a Breckinridge County farm, marking Kentucky's first detection in a captive cervid. The National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) notified the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) on October 11, 2024. The farm is now under quarantine, restricting the movement of live deer and deer products.

CWD is a fatal disease that affects deer, elk, and moose, caused by prions that damage the brain and nervous system. While the disease isn't known to infect humans, officials advise against consuming meat from infected animals. Symptoms include disorientation and severe weight loss.

Following the detection, the State Veterinarian established a management zone within a 5-mile radius and a surveillance zone covering a 15-mile radius around the farm. All deer farms within these zones are under movement restrictions.

This follows Kentucky's first CWD case in the wild, detected in Ballard County in December 2023. The state’s CWD Surveillance Zone now includes Ballard, Carlisle, McCracken, and nearby counties. Kentucky’s CWD Response Plan, created in 2022, has been activated to manage the disease.

Arsonist Strikes Mayfield Electric & Water: Stolen Trucks Recovered, Police Seek Suspect

On October 7, both the Mayfield Police Department and the Mayfield Fire Department responded to a fire at Mayfield Electric & Water Systems, located at 812 W. Farthing Street.

After the fire was put out, authorities reviewed security footage and determined that the fire had been deliberately set. The suspect behind the arson also stole various items from MEWS trucks and the building. Initially, the individual fled in a stolen bucket truck but returned to the scene shortly after, taking another truck before leaving the area once again. One of the stolen trucks, along with some of the missing items, was later found in a nearby field.

Police gathered physical evidence from the scene and sent the security footage to the Secret Service for enhancement. Additional evidence is being forwarded to the Kentucky State Police lab for DNA analysis.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact Crime Stoppers at 270-443-TELL or reach out to detectives at the Mayfield Police Department by calling 270-247-1621.

The Agenda

Cross Drain Replacement on KY 1345 in Ballard County Scheduled for Thursday

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will close a portion of KY 1345 (Myers Road) in Ballard County on Thursday and Friday to conduct a cross drain replacement.

The closure will take place near the one-mile marker, close to the intersection of KY 1345 and KY 286 (Wickliffe Road).

Crews anticipate completing the work and reopening the roadway by the end of the day on Friday.

Milling and Patching Work on I-24

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will conduct milling and patching work along I-24 in Livingston and McCracken counties on Thursday, Oct. 17, resulting in temporary lane closures.

Drivers should anticipate lane restrictions on eastbound I-24 near mile marker 9 in McCracken County, and westbound near mile marker 32 in Livingston County.

The McCracken County project is approximately two miles east of Exit 7 at U.S. 52, while the Livingston County work will take place just west of the Cumberland River Bridge.

Work is expected to begin at 4 a.m. and conclude by the end of the day.

From Lowertown to Local Flavor: How Etcetera Coffeehouse Keeps Community at Its Core

Etcetera Coffeehouse has been a staple in Paducah's Lowertown Arts District since 2006, offering more than just coffee—it’s a hub for local art and community connection. We had a chat with Toney Little, the office manager at Etcetera, to talk about the shop’s employee-owned history, its commitment to the arts, and the unique West Kentucky flavors that make it stand out.

Just for those who aren’t aware, could you give us a quick rundown of the history of Etcetera?

For sure, in 2006 retired school teachers Johanna and Allan Rhodes decided to move to 6th Street and start a coffee shop to serve the growing Lowertown Arts District. Jean Rhodes, their daughter, was living in Boston at the time, working in coffee. She brought a little bit of her expertise home over a break and ended up staying. 11 years later in 2017, Allan and Johanna retired again and sold the shop to 6 long serving employees, Jean included. Jean and one other owner have since moved on but the shop is still 100% employee owned and operated.

Your coffee shop is known for its support of the local arts, what was the reasoning behind collaborating with local artists?

Well the shop was created with the intention of serving the local arts community that was being built up in Lowertown at the time, so it was an obvious choice to integrate arts into the formula. We started exclusively as a student art gallery but after the sale in 2017 we expanded into an open application gallery. Our space is small and can be limiting but we try to keep something on the walls at all times.

What’s the vibe or atmosphere you want customers to feel when they step into your coffee shop?

Hopefully our customers feel at home in our space. I don’t think you could describe it as a sterile or corporate environment, it’s influenced heavily by our regulars and our employees. As far as decoration goes, there are a million small jokes and references to local lore if you look closely. The community here is excellent also, we know the vast majority of our customers by name and the amount of networking that goes on is important to us and also to our employees.

If you could sit down for coffee with any historical figure, who would it be and what would you talk about?

Oh man, this is a hard question to answer considering I’m speaking for the shop, not personally. I think we’d want to talk to someone community-minded, someone equitable. Maybe a labor rights organizer or someone like that.

Is there a local ingredient or flavor that you like to incorporate into your menu to give it a true “West Kentucky” feel?

We use locally sourced honey, so that is an immediate and easy answer there. But aside from that, we definitely have a sweet tooth here. There are a lot of drinks on the menu that could be considered dessert and we’ve found that it serves our customer base nicely. Also our frozen drinks are made with real ice cream, which is not always the case at big box stores.
