Dr. Bob Jackson Announces Retirement After 43 Years at Murray State

After 43 years at Murray State University, Dr. Jackson has announced his retirement as president, effective June 30, 2025. He will continue to serve as President Emeritus to assist with the leadership transition.

Jackson, president since 2018, and his wife, Karen, are both Murray State alumni. Under his leadership, the university has grown through new academic programs, student recruitment efforts, and major campus projects like the new School of Nursing, Veterinary Sciences building, and other renovations. He also launched a $100 million capital campaign and guided the university through the pandemic.

Reflecting on his tenure, Jackson called it a "lifetime honor" and looks forward to spending more time with family. The Board of Regents will begin the search for his successor to ensure a smooth transition.

Several Accidents This Weekend Due to Rain From Hurricane Helene

While the Purchase area has been spared the worst of Hurricane Helene's impact compared to other regions, we've still experienced three days of steady, heavy rain. Unfortunately, this has led to several accidents on the Purchase Parkway over the weekend.

The rain contributed to two separate semi-truck accidents, a three-vehicle collision, and a single truck rollover on the parkway. The likely cause is the parkway's tendency to collect standing water in certain spots. Local drivers may be familiar with these conditions, but those passing through might not be as aware.

To help prevent future accidents, additional road signs could be placed in areas prone to water buildup, providing drivers with better warnings during heavy rain.

Though the remnants of the hurricane have moved on, it's important to remember a few key safety tips when driving in rainy conditions:

  • Slow down

  • Avoid using cruise control

  • Turn on your headlights

  • Steer clear of standing water

  • Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles

The Agenda

Paducah’s Jefferson St Paving Project Starts Wednesday

Starting Wednesday, October 2, crews will begin milling and paving Jefferson Street and West Jefferson Street from the North 28th Street/Joe Clifton Drive intersection to Pines Road.

This project is part of Paducah’s annual street rehabilitation efforts, with $2 million allocated this year. Mayor George Bray highlighted the city’s goal of improving street conditions at a pace faster than their decline. Milling starts on October 2, with paving set to begin on October 7, taking two to three weeks to complete. Residents along this stretch are asked to avoid on-street parking during the work. Traffic flow will be maintained, but brief detours may occur.

Mayfield Groundbreaking Celebration for City Hall & Police Department

This Thursday, October 3rd, at 10:30 a.m., at 211 E. Broadway, Mayfield will break ground on the new City Hall and Police Department, both of which have been displaced since the December 2021 tornado.

Any groundbreaking for a building as central to a community as City Hall is reason for celebration, but for the people of Mayfield and Graves County, this moment holds even deeper significance. It marks the beginning of a new chapter for a city that has been rebuilding and recovering since the devastating tornado. The event symbolizes resilience, hope, and the collective strength of a community determined to rise and build itself up stronger than before.

This milestone represents not only the construction of essential local buildings but also the spirit of Mayfield's journey toward a brighter future.
